Duration: 320 Classroom clock hours 160 Externship hours
Required Materials
Pearson's Comprehensive Medical Assisting text and workbook. Pearson's Medical Terminology
Complete. A medical dictionary(doesn't have to be expensive, basic will do). I cheap
watch w/a second hand (no digital watches, must be manual). Stethoscope.
Course Objectives
To learn Clinical and Administrative skills needed to acquire a job as a competent
Medical Assistant. This will be achieved through class work, testing and hands-on
practice.
Testing
This is a fast paced course so; testing, classwork, homework and projects will be
at the discretion of the Instructor. Depending on how fast we get through lessons
and questions will determine how many assignments will be given. There is a set
amount of tests but homework and classwork may vary

WEEK 1: Chapter 1(Medical Assisting: the Profession), Chapter 2(
Medical Science: History and Practice) homework, classwork, or projects will be
assigned @ teachers discretion
WEEK 2: Chapter 3(Medical Law and Ethics), Chapter 4(Communications:Verbal
and Nonverbal),Chapter 5 (The Office Environment) Testing on Chapter 1 and 2
WEEK 3: Chapter 6(Telephone Techniques), Chapter 7(Patient Reception),
Chapter 8(Appointment Scheduling) Testing on chapters 3,4,5. homework, classwork
or projects may be given, Role Play
WEEK 4: Chapter 12(Managing Medical Records), Chapter 13(Fees,
Billing, Collections and Credit), Chapter 15(Medical Insurance). Testing on Chapters
6,7,8. Role Play
WEEK 5: Chapter 17(Medical Coding),Chapter 19(Body Structure and
Function),Medical Terminology Complete! Chapter 1(Introduction to word parts and
word construction). Testing on chapters 12,13, 15. Homework for Chapter 1 of Med
Term
WEEK 6: Chapter 25(The Circulatory System), Chapter 33(Vital Signs)
Chapter 2, Med Term (Understanding Suffixes) Chapter 3, Med Term(Understanding Prefixes)
Testing on chapter 17,19,1 of Med Term. Homework for Chapter 2-3 of Med Term. Practice
Vital Signs(bring watches and stethoscopes this wk on)
WEEK 7: Chapter 45(Electrocardiography and Pulmonary Function),
Chapter 49(Administering Medications), Chapter 4 Med Term(The Human body in Health and Disease). Testing on chapters 25,33 & 2-3 of Med Term. Practice in vitals
& ekg.
WEEK 8: Chapter 29(The Urinary System) Chapter 42(Urinalysis) Chapter
7MedTerm(Blood and Lymphatic System) Practice vitals, ekg, and urinalysis. Testing
on Chapter 45,49,4.
WEEK 9: Chapter 8MedTerm(The Cardiovascular System) Chapter 12MedTerm(Reproductive
System and Obstetrics) Testing on Chapters 29,42,7. Practice vitals, ekg, urinalysis.
WEEK 10: Chapter 40(The Clinical Laboratory), Chapter 43(Hematology).
Testing on Chapters 8,12. Practice phlebotomy, vitals, ekg, urinalysis.
WEEK 11: Chapter 49(Administering Medications), Chapter 48(Pharmacology),
Testing on Chapters 40,43. Practice injections, phlebotomy,vitals,urinalysis.
WEEK 12: Chapter 32(Infection Control), Chapter 34 (Assisting with
Physical Examinations) Chapter 35 (Assisting with Medical Specialities). Testing
on Chapters 49, 48. Practice on injections and
phlebotomy.
